NEW Merger Update |
 |
On January 17, 2012, the Certified
Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada), the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), and
the Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada) presented members with a framework to unify the
Canadian accounting profession.
The Unification Framework is the result of several months of discussions among our
organizations and consultation with members, Canadian business leaders, governments, regulators and other
stakeholders. It includes details of a transition to a new common designation, Chartered Professional
Accountant (CPA), and the development of a new CPA
Certification Program. |
The structure of the framework is consistent with the unification process already underway in the Province
of Quebec, where the Orders of Chartered Accountants, Certified Management Accountants and Certified General
Accountants have agreed to unify under the Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
By joining together, our organizations and members will be in a strong position to provide the highest
quality financial and management accounting services, while serving and protecting the public interest by
establishing consistent codes of professional conduct, disciplinary systems and licensing regimes.
Unification of the profession would result in Canada having one of the largest accounting organizations in
the world with the influence needed to advance Canadian business interests.
As the Canadian accounting profession is provincially regulated, any decisions regarding subsequent merger
proposals would be made provincially. Please contact your provincial or regional office for
information regarding next steps in your province or region.
