Professional Advanced Standing Policy

CMA Canada is pleased to recognize the following professional accounting organizations as approved for Professional Advanced Standing (PAS):

  • The American Institute of Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA):
    On January 31, 2009, the CMA Canada National Board of Directors approved that a member of the AICPA or a state association of CPA (U.S.) who has acquired their CPA designation through the AICPA and state boards of accountancy qualification process, be granted an exemption from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.

  • The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA):
    On January 31, 2009, the CMA Canada National Board of Directors approved that a member of the ACCA who has acquired their designation through the ACCA qualification process, has completed Advanced Performance Management as one of their options, and has a university degree, be granted an exemption from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.

  • The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA):
    On May 30, 2009, the CMA Canada National Board of Directors approved that CAs be granted an exemption from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.

  • The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada):
    On May 30, 2009, the CMA Canada National Board of Directors approved that CGAs who have completed either the Corporate and Small-Medium Enterprise or the Government and Not-for-Profit PACE stream to become designated as a CGA, and possess a university degree, be granted an exemption from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.

An applicant from a PAS approved organization will be required to complete the CMA Strategic Leadership Program™, successfully pass the Case Examination and Board Report, and fulfill the CMA Canada Provincial/Territorial Partner practical experience requirements. An approved PAS applicant is exempt only from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.

The following criteria are considered in evaluating programs to assess whether an organization should be granted PAS:

PAS Program Requirements

Membership
 
A member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
     

Body of Knowledge
 
Syllabus coverage which reasonably approximates the CMA Canada Competency Map at Knowledge Acquisition Stage.
     

Professional Examination Requirement
 
Accreditation examination or multiple examinations, which are deemed equivalent to the CMA Canada Entrance Examination.
     

Control Procedures on Examination Supervision and Marking
 
Control procedures on examination supervision and marking such as:
  • Centralized exam marking or equivalent control process.
  • Examination delivery and document controls.
  • Marking conducted in fair and impartial manner.
     

The PAS status will be for a period of up to five years from the date the program is approved by the Board, except if the organization’s program no longer satisfies the CMA Competency Map requirements at Knowledge Acquisition Stage.


PAS Criteria for Individual Professional Advanced Standing

Members of an approved PAS organization who immigrate to Canada or reside in a country where the CMA Program is offered must submit their application for exemption of the CMA Canada Entrance Examination to the Partner in the province of the applicant’s residency (http://www.cma-canada.org/index.cfm?ci_id=1886&la_id=1) or the Partner that has jurisdiction in that country.

Criteria for evaluating individual PAS applications:

  1. The individual must be a member in good standing of his/her respective organization.

  2. The individual must have qualified as a professional accountant by completing the program of the PAS organization.

  3. The individual must be employed in the domain of a managerial accountant.

  4. The individual must have permanently relocated to Canada or an approved country.

  5. The individual must have no outstanding disciplinary charges.

  6. The individual must have a degree from a Canadian academic institution or a university degree equivalent to a Canadian university degree.
